Patrick Murphy is an American businessman and politician who served as a U.S. Representative for Florida's 18th congressional district from 2013 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, Murphy previously identified as a Republican before switching parties in 2011. Early life and career

Patrick Murphy was born on March 30, 1983, in Miami, Florida, and grew up in Key Largo. He is the son of Tom Murphy Jr., a CEO of a construction company, and his second wife, Kathleen. Following his parents' divorce during his childhood, Murphy was adopted by his father's third wife, Leslie. He completed his early education at Palmer Trinity School in Miami before attending the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey for a post-graduate year during the 2001-2002 academic year.

Murphy's early life included a notable incident in 2003 when he was arrested at the age of 19 outside a nightclub in Miami Beach. The charges against him included disorderly intoxication and possession of a fake driver's license, which were ultimately dropped. Murphy later described this experience as a significant learning moment in his life.

He pursued higher education at the University of Miami, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with dual majors in finance and accounting in 2006. Following his graduation, Murphy began working in his family's construction business, Coastal Construction. He started as a laborer and progressed to roles in estimating, purchasing, and as an assistant project engineer.

After a year in the family business, Murphy transitioned to a position as an auditor at Deloitte and Touche in Miami, where he worked from September 2007 until May 2010. During this time, he successfully passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination and became certified in Colorado. His promotion to audit senior at Deloitte occurred after he gained certification in September 2009. However, reports later indicated that Murphy may have overstated his accounting experience, as he had practiced as a CPA for less than a year.

In May 2010, he returned to Coastal Construction as vice president, where he played a pivotal role in establishing a subsidiary called Coastal Environmental in response to the 2010 BP oil spill. This subsidiary focused on securing contracts for oil removal in the Gulf of Mexico. Murphy served as vice president and was one of three directors of Coastal Environmental until he was elected to Congress in 2012, at which point he stepped down from his director role but remained an owner. His business career included a significant financial boost from a stock gift from his father, which increased his net worth substantially.

In 2021, Murphy ventured into the technology sector by launching an artificial intelligence company called Togal.AI, which specializes in construction estimating. By 2023, Togal.AI had raised $5 million in a pre-Series A SAFE round, achieving a valuation cap of $50 million, with backing from various investors, including those from major firms like Meta and Goldman Sachs.

House tenure

Murphy's political career began in earnest when he decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. He relocated from Fort Lauderdale to Jupiter to contest the 18th congressional district, which had previously been represented by Republican Tom Rooney. The district had historically leaned Republican, having been held by the party for nearly all of its existence since its creation in 1973. However, following the 2010 redistricting, the district was reshaped to be more compact, losing some of its heavily Republican areas.
