Allen West

Allen B. West is a former U.S. Representative who served Florida's 22nd congressional district from 2011 to 2013. A member of the Republican Party, West is also a retired military officer with a notable career in the U.S. Army. Early life and career

Allen Bernard West was born on February 7, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Elizabeth and Herman West, Sr. His family has a strong military background, with both his father and older brother serving in the armed forces. His father was a World War II veteran, while his brother served in Vietnam. Despite his parents being registered Democrats, West has stated that he was raised with conservative values.

West's interest in military service began in high school when he joined the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC). After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Tennessee, where he participated in the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. He graduated in 1983, receiving a commission as a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery branch of the U.S. Army. West's military lineage continued a tradition of service, as he is part of a family with four consecutive generations of military personnel.

In addition to his undergraduate degree, West pursued further education, earning a master's degree in political science from Kansas State University. He also completed a master of military arts and sciences degree at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer College, focusing on political theory and military history and operations.

West's military career began on November 1, 1983, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he completed the Field Artillery Officer's Basic Course. He later underwent airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia, earning his Parachutist Badge. His initial assignment was as an airborne infantry fire support officer and platoon leader with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, stationed in Italy. Over the years, West held various leadership positions, including commanding a battery in the 1st Infantry Division during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

After returning from Kuwait, West served as an Army ROTC instructor at Kansas State University from 1991 to 1994, where he was recognized as the U.S. Army ROTC Instructor of the Year in 1993. He continued to rise through the ranks, being promoted to major and later serving in various operational roles, including as the operations officer for the 18th Field Artillery Brigade. His military career spanned until 2004, and he returned to military service in 2019.

House tenure

West entered politics in 2008 when he ran as the Republican nominee for Florida's 22nd congressional district. Although he lost to the Democratic incumbent Ron Klein in that election, he successfully contested the seat in 2010, benefiting from a significant Republican wave during the midterm elections. West took office in January 2011, making history as the first African American Republican member of Congress from Florida since the Reconstruction era.
