Early life and career

Mark DeSaulnier was born on March 31, 1952, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He is the son of Edward Joseph DeSaulnier Jr. and Virginia Ann DeSaulnier (née Burke) and was raised in a Roman Catholic family. He completed his undergraduate education at the College of the Holy Cross, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1974.

In the early 1970s, DeSaulnier's family faced a significant challenge when his father, a Massachusetts Superior Court judge, became embroiled in a scandal. This event prompted DeSaulnier to relocate to California, where he settled in Concord. In California, he engaged in various occupations, including working as a probation officer, truck driver, and hotel services employee. He also ventured into the restaurant business, owning and operating several establishments in the San Francisco Bay Area. DeSaulnier was previously married to Melinda Clune, but the couple later divorced.

DeSaulnier's political career began in Concord, where he was appointed to the Concord Planning Commission in 1988. His political engagement deepened when he was elected to the Concord City Council in 1991, serving as mayor in 1993.
