A member of the Democratic Party, he has been involved in various legislative initiatives and has a background in law and public service. Krishnamoorthi is notable for being the first Indian American and person of South Asian descent to serve as a ranking member or chair of any full committee in the U.S. Congress. His career has included roles in both the public and private sectors, and he has been actively engaged in issues related to education, law enforcement funding, and workforce development.

Early life and career

Raja Krishnamoorthi was born on July 19, 1973, in New Delhi, India, into a Tamil Hindu family. When he was just three months old, his family relocated to Buffalo, New York, to allow his father to pursue graduate studies. The early years of Krishnamoorthi's life were marked by economic challenges, as his family relied on public housing and food assistance during this time. In 1980, they moved to Peoria, Illinois, where his father took a position as a professor at Bradley University. This transition allowed the family to enjoy a more stable middle-class lifestyle.

Krishnamoorthi attended public schools in Peoria and distinguished himself academically, ultimately graduating as the valedictorian from Richwoods High School. He pursued higher education at Princeton University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, graduating summa cum laude. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended Harvard Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor with honors. While at Harvard, he served as the managing editor of the Harvard Civil Rights–Civil Liberties Law Review and published a law review article focused on the implementation of Local School Councils in Chicago's public elementary schools.

After completing his legal education, Krishnamoorthi began his professional career as a law clerk for federal judge Joan B. Gottschall in the Northern District of Illinois. He subsequently worked on Barack Obama's 2000 campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives and later served as the issues director for Obama's 2004 Senate campaign. His contributions included assisting in the development of Obama's keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

In addition to his campaign work, Krishnamoorthi was appointed to the Board of the Illinois Housing Development Authority. He practiced law and later served as a special assistant attorney general, where he played a role in establishing the state's anti-corruption unit under Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. His public service continued as he held the position of deputy state treasurer under Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias from 2007 to 2009. He also served as vice-chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council and was involved in high-tech small businesses in the Chicago area until he resigned to avoid any potential conflicts of interest prior to entering Congress.

House tenure

Raja Krishnamoorthi's political career in the U.S. House of Representatives began with his election in 2016. He initially sought the Democratic Party nomination for Illinois comptroller in 2010 but lost in a close primary. In 2012, he ran for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House seat in Illinois's 8th congressional district but was defeated by Tammy Duckworth. However, when Duckworth vacated her seat to run for the U.S. Senate in 2016, Krishnamoorthi declared his candidacy for the open congressional seat. He won the Democratic primary with a significant margin and subsequently defeated his Republican opponent in the general election.

Krishnamoorthi has since been re-elected multiple times, consistently securing a substantial percentage of the vote in both primary and general elections. His tenure in the House began on January 3, 2017, and he has been active in various legislative initiatives and community engagements. He has been recognized for his alignment with President Joe Biden's policies, voting in accordance with the President's stated positions throughout the 117th Congress.

This initiative involved collaboration with local police departments and community organizations, emphasizing the importance of crisis intervention through trained professionals.

In 2017, Krishnamoorthi was instrumental in the passage of the Thompson–Krishnamoorthi Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, which aimed to reform and enhance career and technical education programs across the nation. This legislation reflects his commitment to improving educational opportunities and workforce readiness for students.

Throughout his congressional career, Krishnamoorthi has served on various committees, contributing to discussions and policymaking in areas that align with his legislative priorities. His role as a member of the House has allowed him to advocate for middle-class families and address pressing issues facing his constituents in Illinois's 8th congressional district.
