Richard Lynn Scott, commonly known as Rick Scott, is an American attorney, businessman, politician, and veteran of the United States Navy. He has been serving as the senior United States senator from Florida since 2019, representing the Republican Party. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, Scott was the 45th governor of Florida from 2011 to 2019. His career has been marked by significant involvement in both the healthcare industry and public service, alongside a history of business ventures.

Early life and career

Rick Scott was born on December 1, 1952, in Bloomington, Illinois. He was raised in a lower-middle-class family, facing financial challenges during his childhood. His mother, Esther J. Scott, divorced his biological father, Gordon William Myers, shortly after his birth. In 1954, Esther remarried Orba George Scott Jr., a truck driver, who adopted Rick, leading him to take on his stepfather's surname.

Scott grew up in North Kansas City, Missouri, as the second of five children. His family struggled to make ends meet, with his mother working various jobs, including as a clerk at J.C. Penney. He completed his high school education at North Kansas City High School in 1970 and subsequently attended community college for a year before enlisting in the United States Navy. During his military service, Scott was stationed in Newport, Rhode Island, where he served as a radarman on the USS Glover (FF-1098). His naval service lasted for 29 months, including training.

After completing his service, Scott returned to Kansas City, where he utilized the G.I. Bill to further his education. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 1975 and later obtained a Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University. He was licensed to practice law in Texas in 1978.

Scott's initial foray into business began while he was still in school, as he purchased and revitalized a failing doughnut shop. This entrepreneurial spirit continued as he acquired additional businesses, showcasing his ability to turn around struggling enterprises. After graduating from law school, he worked as an attorney at the law firm of Johnson & Swanson in Dallas, Texas.

Senate tenure

Rick Scott's political career began when he was elected as the governor of Florida in 2010. He won the Republican primary against Bill McCollum and subsequently defeated the Democratic nominee, Alex Sink, in a closely contested general election. Scott was reelected in 2014, again winning by a narrow margin against former governor Charlie Crist. Due to term limits, he was unable to seek a third consecutive term as governor in 2018 and instead turned his attention to the U.S. Senate.

In the 2018 U.S. Senate election, Scott ran against incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. The election was highly competitive and resulted in a mandatory recount due to the narrow margin of victory. Scott emerged victorious, securing his position as a U.S. senator. He began his first term in the Senate in January 2019 and is classified as a Senate Class 1 member. His current term is set to conclude on January 3, 2031.

In the 2024 election, Scott successfully defended his Senate seat against Democratic nominee Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, winning by a significant margin. Following this victory, he became Florida's senior senator in 2025 when Marco Rubio resigned from the Senate to assume the role of Secretary of State.
