Angela Alsobrooks

Angela D. Alsobrooks is an American lawyer and politician currently serving as a United States Senator from Maryland. A member of the Democratic Party, she began her term in the Senate in 2025. Prior to her election to the Senate, Alsobrooks held significant roles in local government, including serving as the state's attorney for Prince George's County from 2011 to 2018 and as the county executive from 2018 to 2024. She is recognized for being the first female county executive and the first Black female county executive in Maryland's history. Early life and career

Angela Deneece Alsobrooks was born on February 23, 1971, in Suitland, Maryland. She is the daughter of James Alsobrooks, who worked as a distributor for The Washington Post and was also a car salesman, and Patricia Alsobrooks, who served as a receptionist. The family has roots in South Carolina, having moved to Maryland in 1956. Alsobrooks has indicated that her surname may have West African or Native American origins. Raised in Camp Springs, Maryland, she attended Benjamin Banneker High School in Washington, D.C.

Alsobrooks pursued higher education at Duke University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in public policy and Afro-American studies in 1993. She continued her studies at the University of Maryland School of Law, obtaining her Juris Doctor degree in 1996. After being admitted to the Maryland Bar in the same year, she began her legal career by clerking for various law firms and judges, including DLA Piper and the Circuit Court of Maryland.

In 1997, Alsobrooks transitioned to public service as an assistant state's attorney in Prince George's County, focusing on domestic violence cases. Her involvement in local government deepened when she became the education liaison for Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson in 2002. In 2003, she was appointed as the executive director of the county revenue authority, further solidifying her commitment to public service and community engagement.
