Gary C. Peters is an American politician, lawyer, and former naval officer currently serving as the senior United States senator from Michigan. A member of the Democratic Party, Peters has held this position since 2015. Before his tenure in the Senate, he represented Michigan's 14th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015. His career spans various roles in public service, finance, and academia, reflecting a diverse professional background.

Early life and career

Gary Charles Peters was born on December 1, 1958, in Pontiac, Michigan. He comes from a family with deep roots in the state, as his ancestors have lived in Michigan since the 1840s. His father, Herbert Garrett Peters, was a public school teacher and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, while his mother, Madeleine Vignier, worked as a nurse's aide and was involved in unionizing her workplace. Growing up in Oakland County, Peters completed his secondary education at Rochester High School.

Peters pursued higher education at Alma College, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. His academic achievements earned him induction into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He continued his education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1984. Additionally, Peters holds a Juris Doctor and a Master of Arts in political science from Wayne State University, as well as a Master of Arts in philosophy from Michigan State University.

In 1993, Peters joined the United States Navy Reserve at the age of 34. Over the course of more than a decade, he served in various capacities, including assignments at Selfridge Air National Guard Base and with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26. His military service included participation in Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf and subsequent overseas deployments following the September 11 attacks. Peters achieved the rank of lieutenant commander before leaving the Reserve in 2008, earning several awards during his service, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. In 2018, he completed a diploma program at the College of Naval Command and Staff, part of the U.S. Naval War College.

Before entering politics, Peters worked for 22 years as a financial advisor. He began his career at Merrill Lynch, where he served as an assistant vice president from 1980 until 1989. He later joined Paine Webber as a vice president. In addition to his work in finance, Peters held a part-time academic position as the Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government at Central Michigan University from 2007 to 2008. His role involved teaching and developing student activities related to Michigan politics and policy. Peters also taught finance at Wayne State University and strategic management and business policy courses at Oakland University. He served as a senior policy and financial analyst for the Michigan Department of Treasury and participated in arbitration panels for the New York Stock Exchange and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

Senate tenure

Peters began his political career at the local level, serving on the Rochester Hills City Council from 1991 to 1993. He then successfully ran for the Michigan Senate, representing the 14th district, which encompasses a diverse population in southeastern Oakland County. Peters was first elected to the Michigan Senate in November 1994 and was reelected in 1998, serving until 2002 when he stepped down due to term limits.

During his time in the Michigan Senate, Peters was recognized by his colleagues and appointed to various leadership roles, including chairing the Democratic caucus. He was also a member of the Michigan Law Revision Commission and the Michigan Sentencing Commission. Among his legislative accomplishments, Peters sponsored a bill that prohibited the establishment of new wells under the state waters of the Great Lakes, except in cases of energy emergencies. This legislation was passed into law without the signature of Governor John Engler. Peters served on multiple committees, including the Senate Finance, Education, Judiciary, and Economic Development Committees, and was also involved with the Natural Resources and the Mental Health and Human Services Committee.

After his tenure in the Michigan Senate, Peters sought higher office. He was the Democratic nominee for Michigan Attorney General in 2002 but narrowly lost the election to Republican Mike Cox. Following this defeat, he was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm as the commissioner of the Michigan Lottery, a position he held from 2003 until 2008, when he resigned to pursue a congressional seat.

In 2014, Peters was elected to the United States Senate, becoming the only non-incumbent Democrat to win a Senate election that year. He was reelected in 2020, defeating his Republican opponent in a closely contested race. Peters has continued to serve in the Senate, with his current term set to conclude on January 3, 2027.
