Jon Husted is an American politician currently serving as the junior United States senator from Ohio. A member of the Republican Party, he assumed office in January 2025 following his appointment to fill a vacancy. Husted has a long history of public service in Ohio, having previously held positions as the state's lieutenant governor and secretary of state. His political career began in the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served for several years, including a term as Speaker. Husted's legislative focus has included election administration, business services, and educational policies.
Early life and career
Jon Husted was born on August 25, 1967, in Royal Oak, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Shortly after his birth, he was placed for adoption due to his biological father's unwillingness to care for him and his biological mother's inability to provide for him. He was adopted by James and Judith Husted and raised in Montpelier, Ohio, where he was the eldest of three children.
Husted completed his high school education at Montpelier High School, graduating in 1985. He then attended the University of Dayton, where he earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. During his time at the university, he was a member of the Dayton Flyers football team, which won the NCAA Division III national championship in 1989. Notably, he played alongside future NFL coach Jon Gruden.
While pursuing his master's degree, Husted was offered a position on the football coaching staff at the University of Toledo. However, he opted to engage in local politics instead, working on a political campaign in the Dayton area. He subsequently took a role as an aide to Montgomery County Commissioner Don Lucas. Following this, he became the Vice President of Business and Economic Development at the Dayton-Area Chamber of Commerce, a position he held until he decided to run for state representative in 2000.
In the 2000 election, Husted successfully ran for office in a competitive five-way race, securing a victory by a margin exceeding 12% over his closest opponent. This victory marked the beginning of his political career in the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served from 2001 to 2009. During this time, he was elected as the 99th Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, a position he held from 2005 to 2009. Following his tenure in the House, Husted served in the Ohio Senate from 2009 to 2011.
Senate tenure
In 2018, Husted initially ran for governor of Ohio but later withdrew from the race to become the running mate of Mike DeWine, who was the Republican nominee for governor. The DeWine-Husted ticket won the election and was subsequently reelected in 2022. Husted served as the 66th lieutenant governor of Ohio from 2019 until his appointment to the U.S. Senate.
On January 17, 2025, Husted was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy left by JD Vance, who had been elected vice president in 2024. He was sworn in on January 21, 2025. Husted is currently running to complete the remainder of Vance's term in the special election scheduled for November 2026, where he has secured the Republican nomination and will face Democratic nominee Sherrod Brown.
Legislative focus and committees
Throughout his political career, Husted has focused on various legislative issues, particularly in the areas of election administration, business services, and educational policies. As Ohio's Secretary of State from 2011 to 2019, he served as the state's chief elections official. In this capacity, he oversaw election administration policies, including early voting schedules and rules governing absentee and provisional ballots. His tenure was marked by efforts to standardize voting procedures across the state, which drew both support and criticism from various political factions and voting rights groups.
Husted's administration implemented uniform days and hours for early voting, replacing a system that allowed county boards of elections to set their own schedules. This change aimed to ensure consistent treatment of voters across Ohio, although it faced opposition from some Democratic officials who argued it could limit access in certain areas. Under his leadership, Ohio's performance in terms of election wait times fluctuated, with the state ranking 29th in 2012, rising to 13th in 2014, and experiencing various shifts in subsequent years.
In addition to his work on election administration, Husted focused on reducing the operational budget of the Secretary of State's office, achieving a significant reduction and eliminating a substantial number of staff positions. He also advocated for the reduction of fees associated with starting new businesses in Ohio and partnered with initiatives aimed at providing digital resources for small businesses.
Husted's legislative efforts extended to educational policies, where he expressed opposition to pay-to-participate fees for extracurricular activities in schools. He supported legislative measures designed to restrict school districts from imposing such fees, although these efforts did not advance significantly during his tenure.
As a U.S. senator, Husted's legislative focus is expected to continue reflecting his previous experiences and priorities, particularly in areas related to business development, election integrity, and educational opportunities. His ongoing role in the Senate will involve participation in various committees, where he will contribute to discussions and decisions on national policies that align with his legislative interests and the needs of his constituents in Ohio.
