Early life and career

Jack Reed was born on November 12, 1949, in Providence, Rhode Island. He is the son of Mary Louise Monahan and Joseph Anthony Reed. His family background is a blend of Anglo-American and Irish-American heritage, with a Catholic upbringing. Reed completed his secondary education at La Salle Academy before pursuing higher education at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971.

Following his graduation, Reed served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer, specifically in the 82nd Airborne Division. His military career included active duty from 1971 to 1979, during which he achieved the rank of captain and earned the Ranger Tab. He served in various capacities, including as a platoon leader and company commander, and later transitioned to the Army Reserve, retiring as a major in 1991.

After leaving active duty, Reed furthered his education at Harvard University, attending the John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he obtained a Master of Public Policy. He returned to West Point in 1978 to serve as an associate professor in the Department of Social Sciences.
