About this issue
Federal climate and environmental policy is administered primarily by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, and the Department of the Interior, under statutes including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Active debate focuses on greenhouse-gas emissions standards for power plants and vehicles, the pace of fossil-fuel leasing on public lands, electric-vehicle and clean-energy tax credits, methane-leak rules, and U.S. participation in the Paris Agreement. Supporters of more aggressive action argue rapid decarbonization is required to limit warming and that clean-energy investment creates domestic jobs; opponents argue current proposals raise energy costs and that nuclear, natural gas, and innovation should drive the transition. Adaptation funding, public-lands management, and air- and water-quality enforcement are adjacent debates.
