About this issue
Federal economic policy in the United States covers monetary policy set by the Federal Reserve, fiscal policy enacted through the federal budget, labor and wage law administered by the Department of Labor, and workforce-development programs that target employment and training. Active policy debate focuses on inflation control, the interest-rate trajectory, federal minimum-wage levels, the use of stimulus spending during downturns, manufacturing reshoring incentives, and the federal role in worker training and child-care subsidies that support labor-force participation. Proponents of more interventionist policy argue federal action is required to reduce inequality, raise wages, and maintain full employment; opponents argue smaller deficits, lower taxes, and lighter regulation generate stronger long-run growth. Trade and tax policy shape outcomes here as well and are treated separately on this site.
