About this issue
Federal education policy in the United States supplements primarily state and local funding, focused on K-12 grants under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, civil-rights enforcement, the Higher Education Act loan and grant programs, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Active congressional debate focuses on student-loan forgiveness and repayment plans, Pell Grant levels, accountability and accreditation rules for colleges, school-choice and charter expansion, parental-rights legislation around curriculum and library content, Title IX enforcement, and the federal role in early-childhood education. Supporters of expanded federal involvement argue equal opportunity requires national standards and aid; opponents argue education decisions belong primarily to states, districts, and parents, and that federal mandates impose costs without commensurate gains. The Department of Education's existence and scope is itself contested. (See: Congressional Research Service, "The Federal Role in K-12 Education"; National Center for Education Statistics, "Digest of Education Statistics".)
