Early life and career

Jay Ramras was born on July 31, 1964, in Fairbanks, Alaska. He is the elder of two sons born to Dan and Dorothy Ramras. His father relocated to Fairbanks from Brooklyn in 1947, establishing the family's roots in the region. Ramras completed his secondary education at Lathrop High School, graduating in 1981. He pursued higher education at Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in American History in 1984.

Throughout his life, Ramras has been a resident of Fairbanks, with two notable exceptions. During his childhood, he spent a year living in Allakaket, a small Alaska Native community. In 1997, he moved briefly to New York City, where he sought to find a Jewish partner willing to relocate to Alaska. This endeavor garnered him some media attention, leading to a minor level of national recognition.

In 1986, Ramras began his career in the hospitality sector by opening a small restaurant named Jaybird's Wingworld, located in a strip mall just outside downtown Fairbanks. His initial venture proved successful, allowing him to expand his business operations in the Fairbanks area over the years. In 1993, he acquired the Food Factory, a restaurant established in 1980 by "Big Bob" Grocott, located in the Bentley Mall. Ramras continued to develop his business portfolio, selling the Food Factory in 2010. Additionally, he purchased Pike's Landing, a restaurant near Fairbanks International Airport, and, in 2000, he and his partners opened Pike's Waterfront Lodge adjacent to Pike's Landing. Throughout his business career, Ramras has appeared in numerous television commercials promoting his establishments, often incorporating his political views and philosophies into these advertisements.

Legislative service

Jay Ramras entered the political arena when he was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 2004, representing the 10th District as a member of the Republican Party.
