Early life and career

Danny Garrett was born on October 11, 1957, in Memphis, Tennessee. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Decatur, Alabama, where they settled when he was just one year old. In 1962, the Garrett family moved again, this time to Center Point, a suburb of Birmingham. Garrett's early education took place in the local school system, where he attended Erwin Elementary School, Erwin Junior High School, and Erwin High School, which is now known as Center Point High School. He graduated from high school in 1976, during which time he was elected class president in both his junior and senior years, indicating early leadership abilities.

Following high school, Garrett pursued higher education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 1976 to 1978. He later transferred to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he completed both a bachelor's and a master's degree. His academic achievements laid a strong foundation for his future career in business and politics. In 1984, he married Carol Sisson, whom he met during their time at the University of Alabama. The couple has three married sons and one grandchild.

Garrett's professional journey began after he graduated from college when he joined the Birmingham office of Ernst & Young. There, he passed the Certified Public Accountant exam, marking the start of his career in finance. He later transitioned to the oil and gas sector, joining Sonat in 1983 as a tax analyst. His career progressed rapidly, and by 1986, he was appointed director of finance and planning for Birmingham Steel Corporation, a mini-mill steel producer. Over the next sixteen years, he held various positions within the company, including a significant role overseeing the acquisition of American Steel & Wire Corporation while temporarily relocating to Cleveland, Ohio.

In 2002, Birmingham Steel was sold to Nucor Corporation, a major player in the steel industry. Following this, Garrett took on the role of chief financial officer at North American Bus Industries (NABI) in 2003, where he was instrumental in restructuring the company and ultimately facilitating its sale to Cerberus Capital Management in 2005. He then joined Progress Rail Services as senior vice president and chief financial officer, where he played a key role in preparing the company for a potential public offering. His tenure at Progress Rail was marked by significant developments, including a cash acquisition offer from Caterpillar, which he declined to maintain his residence in Alabama.

Garrett's business career also included a brief stint as chief financial officer for Summit Products, a toy company, and a subsequent role at Vulcan Steel Products, where he continued to apply his financial expertise.

Legislative service

Garrett's entry into politics began in 2010 when he was appointed by the Trussville City Council to serve on the Trussville City Schools Board of Education. His leadership capabilities were recognized when he was named vice president of the Board in 2012.
