Early life and career

Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga was born on August 12, 1947, in Taʻū, Manu'a, American Samoa. He was the son of High Chief Moliga Sa'ena Aunuua Moliga and Soali’i Galea’i, who hailed from the islands of Fitiuta and Olosega. His upbringing in a prominent family likely influenced his later leadership roles in the community. Moliga's educational journey began at Papatea Junior Elementary School and continued through Samoana High School, culminating in his graduation from Manu'a High School.

Following his secondary education, Moliga pursued higher education in the United States. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Chadron State College in Nebraska. Later, he furthered his academic qualifications by obtaining a master's degree in public administration from San Diego State University, which he completed in July 2012. This educational background provided him with a strong foundation for his future roles in both education and governance.

Moliga's professional career began in the field of education, where he initially worked as a teacher. He progressed to become an elementary school principal and later assumed the role of principal at Manu'a High School in the Manu'a Islands. Additionally, Moliga served as the director of the American Samoa Government Budget Office and held the position of chief procurement officer for two terms. Governorship

Lolo Moliga's political career began with his election to the American Samoa House of Representatives, where he served four terms. He later transitioned to the American Samoa Senate, where he held the position of senate president from 2005 to 2008. During his time in the Senate, he contemplated running for governor in the 2008 election but ultimately withdrew from the race due to other commitments. His political acumen and experience in various legislative roles positioned him as a viable candidate for higher office.

In October 2011, Moliga announced his candidacy for the 2012 gubernatorial election, selecting Senator Lemanu Peleti Mauga as his running mate for the position of Lieutenant Governor. Mauga, a retired U.S. Army member, brought significant experience to the ticket, having chaired important committees in the Senate. To focus on his campaign, Moliga resigned from his role as president of the Development Bank of American Samoa.

The gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2012, where Moliga faced five other candidates. Although he received the highest number of votes, he did not achieve the majority required to win outright, leading to a runoff election on November 20, 2012. In this subsequent election, Moliga secured victory over the incumbent Lieutenant Governor Faoa Aitofele Sunia, officially taking office as governor.

Moliga was re-elected for a second term on November 8, 2016, winning a significant majority of the votes cast. His tenure as governor was characterized by his focus on various issues affecting American Samoa, including economic development, education, and public health.
