Alex Lee is an American politician currently serving as a member of the California State Assembly, representing the 24th district. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been in office since 2020, initially representing the 25th district before redistricting placed him in the 24th district in 2022. Lee is recognized for his progressive stance on various issues, particularly in the realm of housing policy, and is noted for being one of the youngest members of the California legislature.

Early life and career

Born on July 11, 1995, in San Jose, California, Alex Lee is the child of immigrants from Hong Kong. His father, an engineer, and his mother, a nurse, provided a foundation for Lee's educational pursuits. Following his parents' divorce, he experienced a split upbringing, alternating between living with his father in Milpitas and his mother in North San Jose. This diverse upbringing in the Bay Area influenced his understanding of the challenges faced by residents in his future constituency.

Lee completed his high school education at Milpitas High School, graduating in 2013. During his time in high school, he developed an interest in filmmaking, which later informed his communication skills. He pursued higher education at the University of California, Davis, where he earned a dual degree in political science and communications. His involvement in student government began early; he ran for a seat on the student senate in 2014 and later served as the student body president in 2016. However, his tenure as president pro tempore of the ASUCD senate was marked by controversy, as he became the first to be removed mid-quarter due to allegations of exclusionary practices.

While attending UC Davis, Lee gained practical experience in politics through internships with several notable politicians, including Mike Honda, Ed Chau, Evan Low, Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, and Kansen Chu. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2017, he transitioned into a role as a full-time legislative aide for Henry Stern. Before entering the political arena himself, Lee worked as a food delivery driver and lived with his mother, reflecting the economic challenges faced by many in his district due to the high cost of living.

Legislative service

Alex Lee announced his candidacy for the California State Assembly in June 2019, seeking to succeed Kansen Chu, who was retiring from the 25th district. Running as a democratic socialist, he received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America, which aligned with his progressive platform. In the March 2020 nonpartisan blanket primary, Lee finished second among a crowded field of nine candidates, ultimately losing to Republican Bob Brunton. However, he successfully defeated Brunton in the subsequent general election, marking his entry into the State Assembly.

Lee was sworn into office on December 7, 2020, at the age of 25, making him the youngest member of the Assembly and the first member born in the 1990s. Additionally, he is recognized as the first openly bisexual member of the California legislature. On his first day in office, he introduced a bill aimed at banning corporate donations to political candidates, signaling his commitment to campaign finance reform. He participated in the nonpartisan blanket primary, where he again placed first, surpassing Brunton, Chu, and two other Democratic candidates. Lee subsequently won the general election against Brunton, securing his position for a second term, which commenced with his swearing-in on December 5, 2022. He currently serves as the chair of the California Legislative Progressive Caucus, further solidifying his role as a leader among progressive legislators in the state.
