Dannel Malloy

Dannel Patrick Malloy is an American politician who served as the 88th governor of Connecticut from 2011 to 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he held significant leadership roles during his tenure, including chairing the Democratic Governors Association from 2016 to 2017. Following his governorship, he became the Chancellor of the University of Maine System in July 2019. Early life and career

Dannel Malloy was born on July 21, 1955, in Stamford, Connecticut. He was the youngest of eight children in a family of Irish descent, raised in a Catholic household. Malloy's early life was characterized by challenges, including learning disabilities and difficulties with motor coordination. He faced significant hurdles in his childhood, such as not learning to tie his shoes until the fifth grade. Eventually diagnosed with dyslexia, Malloy overcame these challenges and developed a remarkable memory, which he utilized throughout his academic and professional career.

Malloy pursued higher education at Boston College, where he graduated magna cum laude. He later earned a Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School. After passing the bar exam, he began his professional career as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, New York, from 1980 to 1984. During his time as a prosecutor, Malloy successfully tried numerous felony cases, including several homicides, achieving a high conviction rate.

In 1984, Malloy returned to Stamford, where he became a partner at the law firm Abate and Fox, serving in that capacity until 1995. His involvement in local governance began when he was elected to the Stamford Board of Finance, where he served from 1983 to 1994. Governorship

Malloy's political aspirations took a significant turn when he ran for governor of Connecticut. He initially sought the Democratic nomination in 2006 but lost in the primary to New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. However, he returned to the political arena in 2010, filing the necessary paperwork to run for governor and announcing that he would not seek re-election as Mayor of Stamford.

In the 2010 Democratic primary, Malloy secured the party's endorsement and faced a challenge from Ned Lamont, the 2006 U.S. Senate nominee. Malloy won the primary with a substantial margin, receiving approximately 58% of the vote. He selected Nancy Wyman as his running mate, who became the first woman elected State Comptroller in Connecticut's history. In the general election, Malloy faced Republican candidate Thomas C. Foley, ultimately winning by a narrow margin of fewer than 6,500 votes. He was sworn in as governor on January 5, 2011.

During his governorship, Malloy faced various challenges, including budget deficits and economic recovery efforts. He was re-elected in 2014, again facing Foley in a rematch, and increased his margin of victory to over 28,000 votes.
