Ron DeSantis

Ron DeSantis is an American politician and attorney currently serving as the 46th governor of Florida, a position he has held since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, DeSantis previously served as a U.S. representative for Florida's 6th congressional district from 2013 to 2018. He has also been a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, although he withdrew his candidacy in January 2024. Early life and career

Ronald Dion DeSantis was born on September 14, 1978, in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the son of Karen and Ronald Daniel DeSantis, both of whom have roots in Western Pennsylvania and Northeast Ohio. His family background includes Italian heritage, with all four of his great-grandparents having immigrated from Southern Italy during the first Italian diaspora. DeSantis's mother worked as a nurse, while his father was involved in the installation of Nielsen TV-rating boxes. The couple met while attending Youngstown State University in Ohio and later moved to Jacksonville, Florida, before settling in Dunedin, a city in the Tampa Bay area.

DeSantis has one sibling, a younger sister named Christina, who passed away in 2015. His early life included participation in sports; he was a member of the Dunedin National Little League team that reached the 1991 Little League World Series. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and graduated from Dunedin High School in 1997.

Following high school, DeSantis pursued higher education at Yale University, where he majored in history. He was an active member of the university's baseball team, serving as captain and achieving the highest batting average in his senior year. DeSantis graduated from Yale in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, earning magna cum laude honors. After completing his undergraduate studies, he taught history and coached baseball at Darlington School in Georgia for a year before enrolling at Harvard Law School. He graduated from Harvard in 2005 with a Juris Doctor degree, receiving cum laude honors and serving as the business manager for the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy.

In 2004, while still at Harvard, DeSantis was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and assigned to the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps. He completed his training at Naval Justice School in 2005 and subsequently served as a prosecutor at the Judge Advocate General Trial Service Office Command South East in Florida. His military career included a deployment to Iraq in 2007 as a legal adviser to SEAL Team One during the troop surge. DeSantis was stationed at Joint Task Force Guantanamo in 2006, where he worked with detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 2010 but continued to serve in a reserve capacity.
