Anna Eskamani

Anna Eskamani is a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives, currently serving in District 42, which encompasses central portions of Orange County. Born on May 20, 1990, she is recognized as the first Iranian American elected to the Florida Legislature. Eskamani has been a prominent figure in state politics since her election in 2018, advocating for various progressive issues and engaging actively in her community.

Early life and career

Anna Eskamani was born in Orlando, Florida, to Iranian immigrant parents. She has an older brother and a twin sister. Her family faced significant challenges, including the loss of her mother to colon cancer in 2004, which profoundly impacted her upbringing. Growing up in Orlando, Eskamani attended University High School from 2004 to 2008, where she was involved in after-school activities, particularly in technical theater, which likely contributed to her skills in public speaking and communication.

Following high school, Eskamani pursued higher education at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She earned two bachelor's degrees in 2012, followed by two master's degrees in 2016. In 2024, she completed her PhD in public affairs, demonstrating a strong commitment to academic excellence and public service. During her time at UCF, she also obtained two certificates and contributed to the academic community as an adjunct professor.

Eskamani's involvement in community service began early in her life, particularly through her engagement with Planned Parenthood. Her connection to the organization started in 2008 when she sought information about family planning and reproductive health, given the abstinence-only education she received in public school. This experience motivated her to volunteer at her local Planned Parenthood affiliate, leading to a professional role as a development coordinator in 2012. Over six years, she advanced to become the senior director of public affairs and communications for the merged affiliate known as Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, where she focused on advocacy and public engagement.

Legislative service

In July 2017, Anna Eskamani announced her candidacy for the Florida House of Representatives, seeking to represent the 47th district, which had been vacated by Republican Mike Miller. Her campaign was marked by a focus on progressive values, including public education, environmental protection, healthcare access, and gun control legislation. Eskamani's candidacy garnered significant endorsements from community leaders and organizations, including former President Barack Obama and local officials such as Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

The 2018 election cycle was highly competitive, with Eskamani facing two Republican opponents and a Democratic opponent who ultimately withdrew from the race. Despite being a first-time candidate, she raised substantial funds for her campaign, exceeding $522,000. Her efforts paid off when she won the general election on November 6, 2018, securing 57% of the vote against her Republican opponent, Stockton Reeves VI. This victory not only marked her entry into the Florida Legislature but also made her the first Iranian American to serve in this capacity.

During the 2019 legislative session, Eskamani was appointed to four key committees: the Local, Federal & Veterans Affairs Subcommittee, the Oversight, Transparency & Public Management Subcommittee, the PreK-12 Quality Subcommittee, and the Ways & Means Committee. Her approach to her new role was characterized by a commitment to transparency and a refusal to participate in traditional political receptions, emphasizing her focus on substantive legislative work over social events.

Eskamani quickly became known for her advocacy on issues such as abortion rights and gun violence prevention. She was actively involved in discussions surrounding sanctuary city policies and made headlines for her public statements regarding domestic violence cases, advocating for victims' rights. In 2019, she introduced legislation aimed at eliminating statutory limitations for minors who experienced sexual assault, which later became law in 2020. Throughout her legislative career, Eskamani has sponsored numerous bills and co-sponsored over sixty, reflecting her active engagement in various policy areas.
