Early life and career

Kelly Anthon was born on August 4, 1974, in Burley, Idaho. He grew up on a family farm located near Declo, Idaho, where he attended local public schools. Anthon graduated from Declo High School in 1992. Following high school, he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan, an experience that would later inform his professional endeavors and international relations work.

After completing his missionary service, Anthon pursued higher education. He attended Brigham Young University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology in 1998. He then continued his education at the University of Idaho College of Law, where he graduated in 2002. During his time in law school, he was recognized as the Bistline Scholar and served as the student body president, indicating his active engagement in academic and leadership activities.

Upon passing the Idaho bar exam, Anthon began his legal career in private practice in the Mini-Cassia Area of Idaho. His legal expertise led to his appointment as city attorney for several municipalities, including Rupert, Minidoka, and Acequia, in 2003. Anthon's role as city attorney for Burley further established him as a prominent figure in local governance, and at the time, he was noted as the youngest city attorney in the state of Idaho.

In 2012, Anthon transitioned to a role as the City Administrator for Rupert, where he managed various public utilities and oversaw city operations. His contributions to local governance and public service were recognized in 2013 when he was named one of Idaho's 40 most accomplished and influential professionals under the age of 40. In addition to his public service, Anthon has served on the corporate board of directors of the Mart Group, a company involved in potato processing and marketing.

Anthon's professional journey also includes a focus on international business. Proficient in Japanese, he has spent two decades working as a contract consultant and specializing in guest services. His expertise in Japanese language and culture positioned him as a key contact between the Japanese government and the State of Idaho. Throughout his career, he has facilitated investments from Japanese companies into Idaho and has worked to expand market opportunities for Idaho products in Japan. In recognition of his efforts to strengthen cultural and economic ties between Idaho and Japan, Anthon received a commendation from the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2025.

In addition to his legal and administrative roles, Anthon began teaching part-time at the University of Idaho College of Law in 2020, contributing to the education of future legal professionals.

Legislative service

Anthon's legislative career began in 2015 when he was appointed to the Idaho State Senate to fill the vacancy left by Senator Dean Cameron, who resigned to take a position as the director of the Department of Insurance. The Republican Central Committee for Legislative District 27 recommended Anthon for the appointment, and he was selected by Governor Butch Otter. Following his appointment, Anthon successfully ran for election in 2016 and has been re-elected in subsequent election cycles, including 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024.

Since joining the Senate, Anthon has been recognized for his leadership abilities. After his first year, he was identified as one of the 'Emerging Leaders' in state legislatures by The State Legislative Leaders Foundation. In 2017, he was elected as the Majority Caucus Chairman, one of four leadership positions within the Idaho State Senate. His leadership role expanded in 2020 when he was elected as the Idaho Senate Majority Leader, a position he retained after being re-elected in 2022. In 2024, Anthon achieved the role of President Pro Tempore of the Idaho Senate, placing him second in the line of succession to the Governor.
