Edgar González

Edgar González Jr. is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 23rd District. He has been serving in this capacity since his appointment in January 2020. González is notable for being the youngest state representative in Illinois history, as well as the youngest Latino and youngest Democratic representative to hold office in the state. His district encompasses parts of several Chicago neighborhoods, including South Lawndale, Brighton Park, and North Lawndale, as well as the suburb of Cicero.

Early life and career

Edgar González Jr. was born on December 25, 1996, in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Growing up in a working-class family, he was raised by immigrant parents from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. His father is a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 399, while his mother was previously affiliated with the Service Employees International Union Local 73. González's educational journey began at John Spry Elementary School, where he attended preschool, followed by Maria Saucedo Scholastic Academy for his primary education. He later enrolled in Whitney M. Young Magnet High School's Academic Center, graduating in 2015.

Pursuing higher education, González attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in government with a minor in economics in 2019. He became the first member of his family to graduate from college. During his time at Harvard, he engaged in various extracurricular activities, including serving as a political cartoonist for The Harvard Crimson and contributing as a staff writer for the Harvard Political Review. Additionally, he volunteered as a tutor and translator for Harvard Student Agencies, providing support to recent immigrants in English and other subjects. He also initiated a tutoring and mentoring program aimed at at-risk Latinx youth in the Boston area through the nonprofit organization Sociedad Latina.

In terms of professional experience, González interned with several organizations during his academic breaks. His internships included positions at Enlace Chicago, the MacArthur Foundation, and with Michael Rodriguez, a Democratic Committeeman for the 22nd Ward. After graduating from Harvard, he took on the role of constituency services liaison for Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García, where he focused on a range of issues including immigration, social security, veterans' affairs, criminal justice, and education.

Legislative service

González was appointed to the Illinois House of Representatives on January 10, 2020, following the departure of Celina Villanueva, who had been appointed to fill a vacancy in the Illinois State Senate. His appointment was made by a panel of local Democratic leaders. At the time of his inauguration, González was just 23 years old, making him the youngest state representative in Illinois history. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest Latino and the youngest Democratic state representative ever inaugurated in the state.

During his tenure, González has been active in addressing various legislative issues. He was the first member of the Illinois House to publicly disclose that he had tested positive for COVID-19 in May 2020. His legislative work has focused on improving workplace conditions, advocating for workers' rights, and enhancing labor standards in Illinois.

González has been a proponent of increasing workplace safety standards and promoting fair wages for workers. In 2021, he successfully passed legislation that made it an unfair labor practice for employers to threaten or retaliate against employees participating in strikes. This legislation arose in response to incidents where institutions, such as the University of Illinois at Chicago and Cook County Health, employed strikebreakers from areas with high COVID-19 infection rates without requiring them to quarantine, a practice that González and labor representatives sought to eliminate.

In 2023, he sponsored the Temp Worker Fairness and Safety Act, which aimed to improve conditions for day laborers and temporary workers in Illinois. This legislation focused on ensuring equal pay for equal work, addressing the issue of "permatemping," enhancing training and safety standards for workers, and providing the right to refuse strike-breaking assignments in a language that workers can understand.

As of July 15, 2025, González serves on several committees within the Illinois House, including those focused on Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and IT; Ethics and Elections; Gaming; Insurance; Judiciary - Criminal; Labor and Commerce; Revenue and Finance; Small Business and Tech Innovation; and Transportation: Vehicles and Safety. At the beginning of the 104th General Assembly, he was appointed by Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch to serve on his leadership team as an Assistant Majority Leader and Floor Whip for the Democratic caucus.
