Early life and career

La Shawn Ford was born on February 28, 1972, in Chicago, Illinois, specifically in the Cabrini–Green housing project. His family relocated to the Austin community of Chicago when he was two years old. Raised by his grandmother, Ford never met his biological father, and his mother was a teenage single parent. This upbringing in a challenging environment has influenced his commitment to public service and community development.

Ford's educational journey began at Lady Help of Christians Catholic Elementary School, followed by Weber High School. After completing high school, he initially attended the Niles College Seminary, where he contemplated a path toward the priesthood. However, he ultimately shifted his focus to education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education with a minor in political science from Loyola University Chicago. During his time at Loyola, he was also an active participant in the university's basketball program. Ford furthered his education at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Following his academic pursuits, Ford began his professional career as a history teacher and basketball coach at Bridge Elementary School within the Chicago Public Schools system. His dedication to education and youth development was evident during this period. In 2001, he transitioned into the real estate sector, becoming a licensed Illinois real estate broker and founding Ford Desired Real Estate. His involvement in the community extended beyond his professional roles; he served on the boards of various organizations, including the Austin YMCA and Circle Family Care, and was a founding organizer of the Zawadi Youth Group. Additionally, he contributed to the Austin Chamber of Commerce and participated in the parish council and finance committee at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.

Ford's political engagement began at the grassroots level, where he worked as a Democratic precinct captain in his neighborhood, fostering connections and advocating for the needs of his community.

Legislative service
