Omar Aquino

Omar Aquino is an American politician currently serving as a member of the Illinois State Senate, representing the 2nd district. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected in the March 2016 Democratic primary and subsequently appointed to the Senate effective July 1, 2016, following the retirement of William Delgado. At the time of his swearing-in, he became the youngest-ever Latino member of the Illinois State Senate and one of the youngest state senators in the history of Illinois. Prior to his legislative career, Aquino worked as an aide to Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth and held various positions in public service.

Early life and career

Omar Aquino was born on June 24, 1987, and grew up on the Northwest Side of Chicago. He is of Puerto Rican descent, and his upbringing was influenced by his family's commitment to public service; both of his parents were employed in public sector roles, with his mother working for the Chicago Public Schools and his father for the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation. This background likely shaped his interest in community service and public policy.

Aquino completed his secondary education at Lincoln Park High School before pursuing higher education at Loyola University Chicago. He earned two degrees in 2009: a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. His academic background provided a foundation for his future work in public service and legislative affairs.

After completing his education, Aquino began his career in public service as a bilingual case manager with the Illinois Department on Aging. In this role, he worked to assist low-income elderly clients in Chicago through the Community Care Program, highlighting his commitment to serving vulnerable populations. Following this position, he transitioned to a role as a Legislative Aide in the Illinois House of Representatives, where he gained experience in the legislative process and policy development. Most recently, he served as an Outreach Coordinator for Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, further enhancing his understanding of federal and state governmental operations.

Legislative service

In January 2016, Omar Aquino announced his candidacy for the 2nd District State Senate seat, which was becoming vacant due to the retirement of William Delgado. His campaign received significant support, including endorsements from Delgado, various committeemen, elected officials within the district, and numerous labor and progressive organizations, such as the Chicago Teachers Union and the Service Employees International Union. This backing was instrumental in his campaign strategy.

Aquino participated in the March 2016 Democratic primary, where he faced Angelica Alfaro, an employee of the Noble Network of Charter Schools. The primary election was competitive, and Aquino secured victory with a narrow margin. Following the primary, due to Delgado's decision to retire earlier than anticipated, Aquino was appointed to the Senate seat on July 1, 2016. His appointment marked a significant milestone in his political career, as he became a member of the Illinois State Senate at the age of 29.
