Jim Banks

James Edward Banks is a former American politician and naval officer who served as a member of the Indiana State Senate from 2010 to 2016. A member of the Republican Party, he represented Indiana's 17th Senate district during his tenure. Following his time in the state legislature, Banks was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 2017 to 2025. He has since transitioned to the role of junior United States senator from Indiana, beginning his term in 2025.

Early life and career

Jim Banks was born on July 16, 1979, in Columbia City, Indiana. He pursued higher education at Indiana University Bloomington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 2004. This deployment began in September 2014, and he was replaced temporarily by his wife, Amanda Banks, during the 2015 legislative session. He returned from Afghanistan on April 14, 2015, and resumed his responsibilities as a state senator on May 8 of that year.

Before his election to the State Senate, Banks was active in local government. He served on the Whitley County Council from 2008 to 2010, representing the at-large district. His political career at the county level began with a primary election victory over the incumbent councilman, Scott Darley. Following his tenure on the council, he was succeeded by Paula Reimers.
