Wes Moore

Westley Watende Omari Moore, born on October 15, 1978, is an American politician, businessman, author, and former U.S. Army officer, currently serving as the 63rd governor of Maryland since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Moore made history by becoming Maryland's first Black governor and the third Black individual elected governor of any U.S. state. His diverse background encompasses military service, business leadership, and a commitment to social issues, particularly those related to poverty and education.

Early life and career

Wes Moore was born in Takoma Park, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. His father, William Westley Moore Jr., was a broadcast news journalist, while his mother, Joy Thomas Moore, worked in news media and is the daughter of immigrants from Cuba and Jamaica. Moore's maternal grandfather, James Thomas, was notable for being the first Black minister in the Dutch Reformed Church's history. His grandmother, Winell Thomas, was a retired schoolteacher who immigrated to the U.S. after living in Jamaica.

Tragedy struck early in Moore's life when his father passed away from acute epiglottitis when Moore was just three years old. Following this loss, his mother relocated the family to the Bronx, New York, in 1984 to live with her parents. During this time, Moore faced challenges in his youth, including a decline in academic performance and involvement in petty crime. To address these issues, his mother enrolled him in Valley Forge Military Academy and College, where he graduated in 1998 with an associate degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Military Intelligence in the Army Reserve.

Moore then attended Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in international relations and economics in 2001, graduating with honors. While at Johns Hopkins, he was active in athletics, playing as a wide receiver for the university's football team, and he took on leadership roles, including chairing the Men of the NAACP branch. His commitment to public service began early, as he interned for Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke and later for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under Secretary Tom Ridge.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Moore was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, which allowed him to attend Wolfson College, Oxford, where he earned a master's degree in international relations in 2004. His thesis focused on the rise and implications of radical Islam in the Western Hemisphere. Following his education, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, where he was deployed to Afghanistan from 2005 to 2006, achieving the rank of captain before leaving the Army in 2014.

Moore's professional career began in earnest in 2006 when he was appointed as a White House Fellow, working with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He later transitioned into investment banking, holding positions at Deutsche Bank and Citibank until 2012. In 2010, he founded Omari Productions, a television production company that created content for various networks, including PBS and HBO. His commitment to storytelling and social issues led him to produce a PBS series, "Coming Back with Wes Moore," which highlighted the experiences of returning veterans.

In 2014, Moore founded BridgeEdU, a company aimed at supporting students in their transition to college. Although the initiative faced challenges and was eventually acquired in 2019, it reflected Moore's ongoing commitment to education. He also produced the PBS documentary "All the Difference," which followed the lives of two young African-American men from Chicago, further demonstrating his dedication to social issues.

From 2017 to 2021, Moore served as the CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, a prominent charitable organization focused on alleviating poverty in New York City. Under his leadership, the foundation raised significant funds to support various initiatives, including schools and food pantries, and expanded its advocacy efforts to address poverty on a national scale. Prior to his gubernatorial campaign, Moore held board positions with Under Armour and Green Thumb Industries, demonstrating his involvement in both business and social sectors.
