Jamie Raskin

Jamin Ben "Jamie" Raskin is a former member of the Maryland State Senate who served from 2007 to 2016. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented Maryland's Legislative District 20, which includes parts of Montgomery County. Raskin is known for his progressive stance on various issues and has been active in both legal and political spheres, including his current role as a U.S. representative for Maryland's 8th congressional district, a position he has held since 2017.

Early life and career

Jamie Raskin was born on December 13, 1962, in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Barbara Raskin, a journalist and novelist, and Marcus Raskin, a prominent progressive activist and former staff aide to President John F. Kennedy. Raskin's family background is rooted in Jewish heritage, with ancestors who immigrated to the United States from Russia. He completed his early education at Georgetown Day School, graduating in 1979 at the age of 16. Following high school, he attended Harvard College, where he graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa for his academic achievements, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in government with a focus on political theory in 1983. Raskin continued his education at Harvard Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1987 and served as an editor for the Harvard Law Review.

Raskin's professional career in law began with a focus on constitutional law. He spent over 25 years as a professor at the American University Washington College of Law, where he played a significant role in shaping future legal minds. He co-founded and directed the LL.M. program on law and government and was instrumental in establishing the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, which aims to educate high school students about constitutional law. His legal career also included serving as general counsel for Jesse Jackson's National Rainbow Coalition from 1989 to 1990. In 1996, he represented Ross Perot in a legal matter concerning Perot's exclusion from the presidential debates, which led him to publicly criticize the Federal Election Commission and the Commission on Presidential Debates through an op-ed in a major newspaper.

Legislative service

Raskin's entry into politics was marked by his appointment in 1999 by Maryland Governor Parris Glendening as the first chairman of the Maryland State Higher Education Labor Relations Board.
