Early life and career

Joseph Thomas was born on June 25, 1949, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. He completed his secondary education at N. D. Taylor High School before pursuing higher education at Jackson State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. Following his graduation, Thomas began his professional career at AmSouth Bank. Over the course of three decades, he rose through the ranks to hold the position of vice president, demonstrating his expertise in banking and finance.

In addition to his work in the banking sector, Thomas has held several significant appointments in various capacities. In 1980, he was appointed by Governor Ray Mabus to serve on the first Real Estate Appraisal Board in Mississippi, a role he maintained until 1985. His commitment to public service continued under Governor Ronnie Musgrove, who appointed him to the Strategic Economic Development and Planning Committee. Thomas also took on leadership roles in his local community, serving as chairman of the Yazoo City Public Schools and the Yazoo City Public Service Commission.
