Zooey Zephyr is an American politician and university administrator currently serving as a member of the Montana House of Representatives, representing the 95th district. A member of the Democratic Party, she made history in 2022 when she was elected as the first openly transgender person to serve in the Montana Legislature. Zephyr's political career has been marked by her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and her active engagement in legislative debates, particularly concerning issues affecting transgender individuals.

Early life and career

Zooey Zephyr was born on August 29, 1988, in Billings, Montana. At the age of ten, she relocated with her family to Seattle, Washington. During her formative years, Zephyr was involved in competitive wrestling, which contributed to her development of discipline and resilience. She pursued higher education at the University of Washington, where she graduated in 2011 with a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Creative Writing.

Following her undergraduate studies, Zephyr returned to Montana to further her education at the University of Montana. There, she earned master's degrees in both creative writing and literary criticism. Her academic journey led her to join the university's Biology department and later the Office of the Provost, where she served as a Program Manager. In this role, she was responsible for overseeing the university's curricula, demonstrating her commitment to education and academic administration.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Zephyr was an accomplished competitive player in the Super Smash Bros. video game community, participating in tournaments under the username Cazcom. Notably, she achieved a top-eight finish at the Northwest Majors IV tournament in Des Moines, Washington, in May 2014.

Zephyr publicly came out as transgender in 2018, adopting the name Zooey, which means "life," and the surname Zephyr, symbolizing her desire to be "a gentle breeze." Her middle name, Simone, honors her paternal grandmother. As a bisexual trans woman, she has been open about her identity and experiences, contributing to her advocacy work.

Legislative service

Zooey Zephyr's political activism began to take shape in 2020 when she testified before the Montana state legislature in support of LGBTQ+ rights. Her engagement with the legislative process deepened as she met with Republican Governor Greg Gianforte and witnessed the passage of bills that she believed undermined the rights of transgender individuals.
