Early life and career

Gordon M. Johnson was born on December 16, 1949, in Englewood, New Jersey, where he continues to reside. He grew up in a family with a strong sense of public service; his mother worked as a nurse, while his father served as a United States Customs Agent. Johnson's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science and Criminal Justice from St. Thomas Aquinas College, followed by a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision from Seton Hall University.

His commitment to service extended to the military, where he served in the United States Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Major. Johnson participated in significant military operations, including Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s and Operation Joint Endeavor in 1996. He retired from the Army Reserve in 2000, having received numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star and the National Defense Service Medal.

Before entering politics, Johnson had a substantial career in law enforcement. He served for 24 years with the Englewood Police Department, where he attained the rank of patrol sergeant. His experience in law enforcement also included a role as undersheriff in the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, where he worked from 1999 to 2001 and again from 2002 to 2005. Johnson was elected as Bergen County Sheriff from 2001 to 2002, becoming the first African-American to hold a countywide office in Bergen County. His leadership during the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, particularly as commander of the George Washington Bridge, was noted for helping to manage the community’s response to the crisis.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Johnson has been involved in labor relations, serving as president of the State P.B.A. Supervisory Officers Association-Local #216. His diverse professional background laid a strong foundation for his subsequent political career.
