Steve Sisolak

Stephen F. Sisolak is an American businessman and politician who served as the 30th governor of Nevada from 2019 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Sisolak's political career includes significant roles on the Clark County Commission and the Nevada Board of Regents. He is recognized as the last Democrat to hold the governorship of Nevada as of 2026 and the only one elected in the 21st century.

Early life and career

Steve Sisolak was born on December 26, 1953, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is the son of Mary and Edward Frank Sisolak, with his father working as a design engineer for General Motors and his mother employed at a convenience store. Sisolak has Slovak and Czech ancestry, with his grandfather, Vendelín Šisolák, hailing from Lakšárska Nová Ves. He spent his formative years in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where he graduated from Wauwatosa West High School in 1972. During his high school years, Sisolak was active in student council and played basketball, and he began working as a caddie at the age of 13.

After completing high school, Sisolak pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1974. Shortly after graduation, he relocated to Nevada, where he continued his studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, obtaining a Master of Business Administration in 1978. His early career included a partnership in the American Distributing Company, a telemarketing firm that specialized in promotional items, as well as a partnership in another company, Associated Industries.

Sisolak's initial foray into politics came in 1996 when he ran for the Nevada Senate in the Las Vegas-based 5th district but was defeated by the Republican incumbent, Ann O'Connell. Despite this setback, he continued to engage in public service and was elected to the Nevada Board of Regents in 1998. During his tenure on the Board, which lasted until 2008, Sisolak was an advocate for students, successfully fighting against tuition increases and ensuring refunds for students who had been incorrectly charged out-of-state tuition.
