John Kasich

John Richard Kasich Jr. is an American politician and author who served as the 69th governor of Ohio from 2011 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party, Kasich has had a long career in public service, which includes a notable tenure as a U.S. Congressman from 1983 to 2001. He also made two bids for the presidential nomination, first in 2000 and later in 2016. Early life and career

John Kasich was born on May 13, 1952, in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. He was raised in a family with a strong immigrant background; his father, John Richard Kasich, was a mail carrier of Czech descent, and his mother, Anne Vukovich, was of Croatian descent. Both parents were children of immigrants and practiced Roman Catholicism, which influenced Kasich's upbringing. He has often identified with his mixed heritage, describing himself as both Croatian and Czech.

Kasich attended public schools in McKees Rocks before moving to Columbus, Ohio, in 1970 to pursue higher education at Ohio State University. There, he joined the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and became politically active early on. As a freshman, he wrote a letter to President Richard Nixon expressing his concerns about the nation, which led to a meeting with the President in December 1970, facilitated by the university's president.

He graduated from Ohio State University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. Following his graduation, Kasich worked as a researcher for the Ohio Legislative Service Commission and served as an administrative assistant to state Senator Buz Lukens from 1975 to 1978. His political career began in earnest when he ran for the Ohio Senate in 1978 against the Democratic incumbent Robert O'Shaughnessy. At the age of 26, Kasich won the election with a significant majority, becoming one of the youngest individuals ever elected to the Ohio Senate. During his time in the Senate, he gained a reputation for his independent stance, notably refusing a pay raise and opposing tax increases.

Governorship

Kasich's political trajectory took a significant turn when he decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982. He won the Republican primary for Ohio's 12th congressional district and subsequently defeated the incumbent Democratic Congressman Bob Shamansky in the general election. Over the course of his congressional career, Kasich was re-elected eight times, consistently winning with substantial margins.

He won the election against the incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland and was re-elected in 2014, defeating Democratic challenger Ed FitzGerald by a significant margin.
