This early experience in New Jersey would shape his formative years.

In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, Looker enlisted in the New Jersey militia, serving as a private for the duration of the conflict. After the war, Looker married Pamela Clark in 1779, and the couple would eventually have children together.
