David Gomberg

David Gomberg is a Democratic member of the Oregon House of Representatives, currently representing District 10. He has served in this capacity since January 14, 2013. Prior to his legislative career, Gomberg was co-owner of a kite design and manufacturing business, which contributed to his prominence in both the local business community and the kite flying industry.

Early life and career

David Gomberg was born on June 9, 1953, in London, England. He is the son of a U.S. Air Force officer and his British wife, which reflects a diverse cultural background. Gomberg completed his secondary education at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento, California, graduating in 1971. He identifies as Jewish, which is an aspect of his personal identity.

Following high school, Gomberg moved to Oregon to pursue higher education at Oregon State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science, graduating with honors in 1976. During his time at the university, he was actively involved in student government, serving as the student body president. He continued his education at Oregon State, obtaining an interdisciplinary master's degree in Political Science, History, and Economics in 1977. His academic pursuits laid a strong foundation for his future career in public service.

In 1978, Gomberg began his professional career working for U.S. Congressman Les AuCoin in Washington, D.C., and later in Portland, Oregon. This experience provided him with valuable insights into the legislative process and the workings of government. Following this role, he returned to Oregon to attend Willamette University, where he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1981.

Gomberg's early involvement in politics continued when he worked in the Oregon Legislative Assembly. He served as Chief-of-Staff to freshman legislator Barbara Roberts and later as the administrator of the House Education Committee during the early 1980s. After this, he took on the role of Administrative Hearings Referee for the Department of Motor Vehicles, a position he held until he chose not to cross a public employee picket line, which led to his departure from that role.

In 1986, Gomberg married Susan Elizabeth Oswald, and together they moved to the Oregon Coast in 1988. He took on the role of executive director of the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce but left after two years to focus on his growing kite business. This transition marked a significant shift in his career, leading him to establish Gomberg Kite Productions International (GKPI).

Legislative service

David Gomberg's political career took a significant turn when he was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 2012, representing House District 10. His district encompasses parts of Lincoln, Tillamook, Yamhill, and Polk counties, and following redistricting in 2020, it was expanded to include all of Lincoln County and portions of Benton and Lane Counties. This area stretches over 100 miles along the central coast and extends inland for about 50 miles through the Coast Range.
