Early life and career
Nikil Saval was born on December 27, 1982, in Los Angeles, California. His parents, who emigrated from South India in 1970, initially settled in New Mexico before relocating to Los Angeles. His father, who hails from a village near Bangalore, has a Ph.D. in biochemistry, while his mother, originally from Bangalore, earned a master’s degree in microbiology in New Mexico. Saval has one brother, who is involved in academia.
Growing up in West Los Angeles, Saval was immersed in an environment shaped by his family's entrepreneurial efforts. In the same year he was born, his parents opened a Numero Uno pizza franchise in Santa Monica. The restaurant employed many immigrants, particularly from El Salvador, and his parents played a role in assisting some undocumented workers in securing legal status. This exposure to the challenges and opportunities faced by working-class immigrants left a lasting impression on Saval, instilling in him a sense of solidarity among diverse communities.
Saval attended public schools in Los Angeles until eighth grade, when he received a scholarship from the non-profit organization A Better Chance, which supports minority students in accessing quality education. He subsequently attended Harvard-Westlake, a college-preparatory private school, where he graduated in 2001 and participated in student council activities. Saval pursued higher education at Columbia University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 2005. He later obtained a Ph.D. in English Literature from Stanford University in 2014.

Saval's career in writing and editing includes a significant role as co-editor-in-chief of n+1 from 2014 to 2019, during which he contributed to various prominent publications, including The New York Times and The New Yorker, focusing on architecture and design. His first book, "Cubed: A Secret History of the Workplace," published in 2014, examines the evolution of office environments and the lives of workers, earning recognition as a notable book of the year by The New York Times. His second book, "Rage in Harlem: June Jordan and Architecture," released in 2024, explores the collaboration between writer June Jordan and architect R. Buckminster Fuller in reimagining Harlem after the 1964 race riots.
In addition to his writing career, Saval has been active in political organizing. He co-founded Reclaim Philadelphia, an organization that emerged from the Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign, which played a role in electing Larry Krasner as district attorney of Philadelphia. In 2018, he became the Ward Leader of Philadelphia's 2nd Ward.
Saval's political career took a significant turn in 2020 when he ran for the Pennsylvania State Senate, challenging incumbent Larry Farnese. In 2022, he introduced the Whole-Home Repairs Act, which aims to provide grants for health-and-safety-focused home repairs to eligible residents. This legislation also extends to small landlords and includes provisions for training qualified home-repair workers. The program is designed to assist low-income residents in becoming eligible for federal grants aimed at energy efficiency improvements.
In 2024, Saval supported a legislative proposal aimed at increasing housing supply in Pennsylvania by easing restrictive zoning regulations. This proposal would allow for duplexes in small towns and fourplexes in mid-sized towns that were previously zoned exclusively for single-family housing, as well as permit accessory dwelling units in all areas designated for single-family homes.
For the 2025-2026 legislative session, Saval serves on several committees, including Urban Affairs & Housing, where he holds the position of Minority Chair, as well as Environmental Resources & Energy, Judiciary, State Government, and Transportation.
