Dennis Daugaard was born on June 11, 1953, in South Dakota, where he grew up on a family farm near Garretson. He was raised in a unique environment, as both of his parents were deaf. This familial background shaped his early experiences, with American Sign Language being the primary mode of communication in his household. Daugaard's upbringing in a rural setting included attending a one-room country school during his childhood. For his secondary education, he traveled to the city of Dell Rapids, where he not only completed his studies but also participated in music, playing the French horn.

Daugaard pursued higher education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in government in 1975. He continued his education at Northwestern University School of Law, graduating in 1978. To finance his studies, he took on various jobs, including working as an American Sign Language interpreter, a bus driver, a law clerk, and a security guard.

After completing his law degree, Daugaard began his professional career as an attorney in Chicago, where he practiced from 1978 until 1981. He then returned to South Dakota, where he married Linda Schmidt, and together they raised three children: Laura, Sara, and Christopher. Daugaard transitioned into the banking sector, serving as an executive banker in Sioux Falls from 1981 to 1990. His career took a turn when he joined the Children's Home Society of South Dakota, where he held the position of Development Director from 1990 to 2002 and later served as Executive Director from 2002 to 2009.

Legislative service

Daugaard's entry into politics began in 1996 when he was elected to the South Dakota State Senate as a Republican. His tenure in the state legislature lasted until 2003, during which he focused on various legislative priorities.
