Bill Haslam

William Edward Haslam is an American businessman and politician who served as the 49th governor of Tennessee from 2011 to 2019. Early life and career

Bill Haslam was born on August 23, 1958, in Knoxville, Tennessee, as the third child of Jim Haslam, the founder of Pilot Corporation, which is known for its convenience store and travel center chain, Pilot Flying J. His mother, Cynthia Allen Haslam, played a significant role in his upbringing. The Haslam family has a longstanding connection to the Republican Party, with Jim Haslam being an active fundraiser and supporter of the University of Tennessee.

Haslam's education began at the Webb School of Knoxville, where he became involved in the Christian organization Young Life. He later attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1980. During his time at Emory, he was a member of the Beta Chi chapter of the Sigma Chi International Fraternity. Initially, Haslam had aspirations of becoming a history teacher and eventually a minister. However, after graduating, he returned to Knoxville to work for Pilot Corporation, intending to gain business experience before pursuing seminary.
