Shannon Zimmerman is a Republican politician and businessman currently serving as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 30th Assembly District. Early life and career

Shannon Zimmerman was born on March 15, 1972, in Madison, Wisconsin. He spent much of his childhood in rural northwest Wisconsin, where he attended public school in Augusta, Wisconsin. Zimmerman graduated from Augusta High School in 1990. During his high school years, he was a member of the football team that won the Wisconsin State Football Championship in Division 6 in November 1989. Following high school, he pursued higher education at Chippewa Valley Technical College before transferring to the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where he continued his studies.

In 1996, after completing his education, Zimmerman founded Sajan Inc., a language translation company based in the region. He served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, which gained recognition for its growth and success in the business sector. Under his leadership, Sajan achieved the status of being listed among the INC 500, a distinction awarded to some of the fastest-growing private companies in America. This recognition was a testament to the effective management and expansion strategies implemented during his tenure.

In 2010, following the financial crisis of 2008, Zimmerman played a significant role in the merger of Sajan with MathStar, a Minnesota-based semiconductor manufacturer that had been struggling financially. This merger allowed Zimmerman to continue as CEO and further develop the combined company's offerings. In addition to his business endeavors, Zimmerman and his family established Belle Vinez Vineyard and Winery in 2012, which they expanded to include a retail section by 2015. They eventually sold the winery in 2022, marking another chapter in Zimmerman's diverse career.

Legislative service

Shannon Zimmerman's political career began when he ran for the Wisconsin State Assembly in the 30th Assembly District. The seat became available when the incumbent, Dean Knudson, chose not to seek re-election. Zimmerman entered the race and competed against Paul Berning, a local insurance agent, for the Republican nomination. He subsequently won the general election, defeating Democrat Scott Nelson and Independent Aaron Taylor.

In 2024, the state of Wisconsin underwent a significant redistricting process that altered the legislative maps, undoing previous Republican gerrymandering. Zimmerman's district was redrawn to resemble its boundaries prior to the 2021 redistricting, centering around the cities of Hudson and River Falls. This change made the 30th Assembly District one of the most competitive districts in the state assembly. In the general election, Zimmerman successfully defeated Democrat Alison Page, a former healthcare executive, by an 8-point margin.

In 2018, Zimmerman also sought to expand his political influence by running for a special election in the Wisconsin Senate after Sheila Harsdorf resigned to join the Scott Walker administration. During this campaign, he self-funded his efforts and emphasized his support for the Foxconn deal, which he argued differentiated him from his opponent, Adam Jarchow. Despite his efforts, Zimmerman was defeated by Jarchow in the primary by a 12-point margin.
