Following his undergraduate studies, Doyle gained practical political experience through an internship in the Washington, D.C., office of U.S. Representative Alvin Baldus. He continued to work as a staffer for Baldus until the congressman left office in January 1981.

Upon returning to Wisconsin, Doyle enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison. During his time in law school, he worked as a full-time legislative aide for State Representative Joseph Andrea, a Democrat from Kenosha. Doyle completed his Juris Doctor degree in 1986 and subsequently began practicing law in La Crosse, where he specialized in family law and mediation.
