In 2001, Pushkin relocated from Morgantown to Charleston, where he began his career as a taxi driver. During his time as a taxi driver, he faced significant challenges, including being fired due to his ongoing battle with addiction. However, after achieving sobriety, he was rehired and has maintained his sobriety since September 3, 2004.

In addition to his work as a taxi driver, Pushkin is an accomplished musician. He is a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 136 and performs with a band called "600 Lbs of Sin!" The band, named after a Grateful Dead song, features original music that often addresses political themes, particularly issues related to coal mining and environmental concerns. One of his notable songs was inspired by the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster, a tragic event that deeply affected him and prompted him to taxi reporters to the site. Pushkin has also performed in another band, “Mike Pushkin and the Loyal Opposition,” and frequently covers songs by the Grateful Dead at various events.
