Angus S. King Jr. is an American lawyer and politician currently serving as the junior United States senator from Maine. He has held this position since 2013 and is known for being an independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party. Before his tenure in the Senate, King served as the 72nd governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003, during which he was the only independent governor in the United States at that time. His political career has been marked by a focus on pragmatic governance and environmental issues, as well as a commitment to public service.

Early life and career

Angus Stanley King Jr. was born on March 31, 1944, in Alexandria, Virginia. He is the son of Ellen Archer Ticer and Angus Stanley King, a lawyer who served as a U.S. magistrate for the Eastern District of Virginia. King completed his secondary education at Francis C. Hammond High School in Alexandria before pursuing higher education at Dartmouth College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. While at Dartmouth, he was a member of the Delta Upsilon social fraternity. Following his undergraduate studies, King attended the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctor in 1969.

After completing his law degree, King began his legal career in Brunswick, Maine, where he entered private practice. He also worked as a staff attorney for Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Skowhegan, providing legal aid to those in need. In the early 1970s, King served as the chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics and later worked as a legislative assistant to Democratic U.S. Senator William Hathaway. During this time, he gained recognition as a public television host in Maine, further establishing his presence in the state.

In 1973, at the age of 29, King faced a significant health challenge when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of melanoma. He attributes his survival to having health insurance, a personal experience that has influenced his support for healthcare reforms, including the Affordable Care Act. Following his recovery, King returned to Maine in 1975 to practice law with the firm Smith, Loyd and King. In 1983, he transitioned to the energy sector as vice president of Swift River/Hafslund Company, which focused on developing alternative energy projects, including hydroelectric and biomass initiatives.

In 1989, King founded Northeast Energy Management, Inc., a company dedicated to electrical energy conservation projects. He successfully sold the company in 1994, which contributed to his financial standing. By 2012, his investments were estimated to be valued between $4.8 million and $22.5 million, reflecting his business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit.

Senate tenure

Angus King announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2012 to succeed retiring Republican Senator Olympia Snowe. He ran as an independent candidate and won the election, marking the beginning of his Senate tenure on January 3, 2013. King’s victory was notable as he became one of only two independents in the Senate, the other being Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who also caucuses with the Democratic Party. King was reelected in 2018 and is currently serving his third term, which is set to conclude on January 3, 2031.

During his time in the Senate, King has maintained a focus on issues pertinent to Maine and the broader national landscape. His independent status allows him to navigate between party lines, often collaborating with both Democrats and Republicans on various legislative initiatives. This approach has enabled him to advocate for policies that reflect the interests of his constituents while fostering bipartisanship in a polarized political environment.

Legislative focus and committees

As a U.S. senator, Angus King has concentrated on several key areas, including energy policy, healthcare, and environmental protection. His background in energy management has informed his commitment to sustainable energy practices and addressing climate change. King has been an advocate for renewable energy sources and has supported legislation aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency.

In addition to energy issues, King has emphasized the importance of healthcare access and affordability. His personal experience with melanoma has shaped his perspective on health insurance and healthcare reform, leading him to support initiatives that aim to expand coverage and improve healthcare outcomes for all Americans.

King serves on several Senate committees, where he plays a role in shaping legislation and overseeing various government functions. His committee assignments allow him to engage with a wide range of issues, from national security to economic development. By participating in these committees, King has the opportunity to influence policy decisions that impact both Maine and the nation as a whole.

Throughout his Senate career, King has consistently sought to represent the interests of his constituents while promoting a collaborative and pragmatic approach to governance. His independent status, combined with his experience as a former governor and businessman, provides him with a unique perspective on the challenges facing the country. As he continues to serve in the Senate, King remains focused on addressing the needs of Maine residents and contributing to the legislative process in a meaningful way.
