Early life and career

Delos Ashley was born on February 19, 1828, in Arkansas Post, which was part of the Arkansas Territory at the time. He was the son of Chester Ashley, a prominent attorney who later became a U.S. senator from Arkansas. Growing up in a politically active family, Ashley received his education in local schools before pursuing a legal career. He studied law under the guidance of an attorney in Monroe, Michigan, and was admitted to the bar in 1849.

Following his admission to the bar, Ashley relocated to Monterey, California, where he established a law practice. His early political career began with his election as the district attorney of Monterey County, a position he held from 1851 to 1852. His involvement in California politics deepened when he was elected to the California State Assembly, representing the 3rd District from 1854 to 1855. Subsequently, he served in the California State Senate from 1856 to 1857, during which time he held the position of president pro tempore. Initially a member of the Democratic Party, Ashley later joined the Know Nothing Party before ultimately becoming a Republican.

In addition to his legislative roles, Ashley served as California State Treasurer from 1862 to 1863.
